Can you spot the starfish, crabs, and eels in this pillow-top designed during World War I by Belgian sculptor Isidore de Rudder? The design's central inscription "1914 Yzer 1915" commemorates a famous battle at the Yzer River, where Belgian engineers prevented the German troops from advancing by flooding the fields surrounding the river.
When the German army invaded Belgium in August 1914, the British navy blockaded Belgium's harbors to cut off German supply lines. The countries reached an agreement allowing Belgium to import thread and export lace made from that thread. The laces were ordered and sold through the Commission for Relief in Belgium. This effort helped thousands of Belgian lace makers earn money for food for their families.
