Photograph by @chancellordavid | A lightly-sedated rhino responds to the approach of a vets team, lewa conservancy, northern Kenya. Rhinos once roamed in their millions across large swathes of Asia and Africa. The first period of decline was caused by wholesale Colonial-era hunting and habitat loss as land was increasingly turned to agriculture and urban development. There are now about 25,000 rhinos left in Africa - 20,000 white rhinos and 5,000 black rhinos - with the majority in South Africa. Rhino protection has grown more expensive in the last few years due to a surge in poaching fueled by international crime syndicates feeding a demand in places such as Vietnam, where horn is used as a traditional medicine and sold at prices higher than gold; demand surged after rumours circulated in Vietnam that a minister's relative was cured of cancer by rhino horn. There is no basis in science to support the claim. Last year 1054 rhino were killed by poachers in South Africa alone, and In just a decade, more than 7137 rhino have been lost to poaching across the entire continent.
