These #coins are a selection of Australia’s earliest currency. The English authorities assumed local #currency wouldn’t be needed in the new convict colony, so visiting sailors brought a mix of foreign coins, including guineas, guilders, ducats, rupees, johannas, mohurs and dollars to NSW. These coins were proclaimed as legitimate currency by Governor King. ⠀

In 1813 Governor Macquarie converted 40,000 Spanish dollars into local currency, by removing the centre of each dollar. The residue of each dollar was valued at five shillings and has come to be known as the holey dollar.⠀
