Lions generally have much lighter manes than this big guy here and though it is unclear why, there are many theories. Some biologists believe that this pigment may be an attribute of heat stress, prolonged days between eating and Lions that exercise more due to larger territories. Lions do not have the ability to sweat through glands, only through panting, which can make for some brutally hot conditions when you're neck and head are covered in thick fur. A tough price to pay for fashion and intimidation, heavy is the crown! ??
