To coincide with an exhibition of the work of Glenn Brown at Tate Liverpool in spring 2009, the cover of Tate Etc. issue 15 featured his painting Searched Hard for You and Your Special Ways 1995 – a topsy-turvy take on a work by the 18th-cenury French artist Jean-Honoré Fragonard. On the spine, words written by a young Lucian Freud to his friend Elsie Nicholson in a postcard from 1943 (discovered in the Tate Archive) offered another view of an artist we thought we knew everything about: ‘I am staying at a really hot stuff tip-top hop-scotch luxury dive for old dames.’
