"In ’67 we had one issue: the Vietnam War. It united my generation, largely because our brothers and lovers were vulnerable to the draft," writes Mary Gordon. "Today there are so many issues, all of which seem urgent: the environment, immigration, reproductive rights, voting rights. I see my students struggling over how to choose. So much of political effectiveness is a matter of endurance, of staying in for the long haul. And I wonder how much time, how much energy is available—especially to women already overstressed by trying to balance work and the caretaking duties that fall so disproportionately on our shoulders.
