It is not uncommon to see members of @akasorority1908 wearing a strand of pearls tucked inside their letterman jackets. For the AKAs, each pearl represents one of the 20 women who founded and expanded the sorority, the first for African-American women, back in 1908. Those trailblazers are remembered every year on January 15, when members old and new congregate at events across the country dressed in the signature hues of the sisterhood—a rosy pink and Ivy green—colors that symbolize femininity and resilience, respectively. "It’s the most humbling experience when you meet women who have been part of this for 75 years," says Daeja Langston, an economics major who was among the crowds gathered for a founders’ day luncheon in Atlanta earlier this year. "Just as your biological sisters will look out for you and will stand in your corner and fight for you, that’s what women in this sorority will do." In celebration of Vogue's 125th birthday we photographed American women, coast to coast. Tap the link in our bio to see the full project.
