This large basin made around 1545 may have been used for washing the feet of Suleiman the Magnificent (r. 1520–1566), the longest reigning sultan of the Ottoman Empire. The basin is an example of İznik pottery, named after the town that became a centre of pottery production during the 15th to 17th centuries. İznik ceramics were known for their traditional Ottoman arabesque and floral patterns which were combined with Chinese influences.

The outside of this bowl is painted in a lively pattern of cobalt blue and turquoise lotus flowers, enclosed by slender blue stems and long green leaves. The inside is decorated with an arrangement of medallions containing cloud scrolls, surrounded by tall stalks of bluebells.
