Every year since 1955, young women have come from across the country in polished boots and their best fringed chaps in order to compete in the Miss Rodeo America pageant. Primarily from the South and Midwest, they bring with them the hopes of garnering a scholarship to further their educations, a Black Hills Gold crown to perch on the brim of their cowboy hat, and the pride of knowing that they’ve earned the title of America’s premiere rodeo queen. Contestants range in age from 19 to 26, and they compete in categories that include horsemanship, public speaking, personality interviews, and a fashion show. “It’s like the Super Bowl of rodeos,” says Charlie Engman, a fashion photographer known for his surrealist meditations on beauty, who turned his lens on three days of the competition. (It was, he said, “my first rodeo.”) In celebration of Vogue's 125th birthday we photographed American women, coast to coast. Tap the link in our bio to see the full project.
