Photo by @Tim Laman. The “Wonderland of Rocks”. An aptly named area of the incomparable Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California, catches the last rays of winter afternoon sun during my recent visit. Irresistible for the adventurous hiker and rock climber, this area is like a geology lesson laid bare. These huge rock piles began eons ago as magma rose up from deep within the earth, and crystallized into granite that cracked as it cooled. Then as the granite continued to uplift and came into contact with groundwater, it weathered into rounded boulders as the surface soil eroded away, leaving these beautiful heaps of rock.
