Photograph by @Thomas Peschak Most people think that sardines "live" in tin cans, when in fact they are one of the most important components of the marine food web, especially off Namibia and South Africa. Most conservation campaigns focus on charismatic apex predators like tuna, sharks and dolphins, while small silvery forage fish are often forgotten. Sardines are oily, rich in calories and are an important part of the diets of many big and charismatic marine animals. In the wake of overfishing sardines (often to make pet food) many seabirds, seals, sharks, whales and dolphins are at risk of starving to death. @ナショナルジオグラフィック @natgeocreative @thephotosociety For more images of "sexy" sardines and the ocean predators that depend on them follow @Thomas Peschak
