This image, aesthetically influenced by the master Itailian painter Caravaggio, is from my visual case studies on varied notions of masculinity, a project published in the January issue of @ナショナルジオグラフィック Magazine. Today, I’ve taken over the @national_gallery Instagram account where, as part of the ongoing exhibition, #BeyondCaravaggio, I’m sharing images that reflect the artist’s enduring impact on the modern visual landscape. Letizia Treves, the curator of #BeyondCaravaggio, ruminates on Caravaggio’s particular influence in this picture. “This photograph’s nocturnal setting and claustrophobic composition recall Caravaggio’s Taking of Christ, as does the strong emotional charge between the two main protagonists.
