Photo and caption by @petekmuller. “Emotional expression and acceptance of that expression is critical,” says Father Edwin Leahy, a wiry Benedictine monk who has served as the headmaster of Newark's Saint Benedict's Prep school for four decades. The school is an oasis of refuge and support in Newark, a city plagued by drugs, poverty and violent crime. “For young men to be able to express emotion without criticism and ridicule is incredibly important,” he adds. Leahy and his faculty contend with pervasive levels of anger among many incoming students, he says. "If young guys don’t find constructive means of expression, their anger either gets expressed outwardly in poor behavior or inwardly as self destruction.” ________________________________________________
It is with great pleasure that I share elements of the project to which I've devoted the last year. On assignment for National Geographic Magazine, I traveled to countries all over the world exploring various ways that boys learn to become men.
