Photo by @petekmuller. Members of Comandos de Salvamento enjoy downtime between calls to render emergency services in San Salvador, El Salvador. These boys have rejected the violent gangs that have seduced many of their peers, opting instead to express their manhood by helping those in need. Comandos de Salvamento is a volunteer emergency medical response organization that was founded in the early 1960’s and has played a prominent role in aiding the Salvadoran people in both war and peace. While male dominated, the organization is proudly co-ed and embraces a strong ideology of gender equality. Young men work cooperatively with young women on most of their response calls. At the main dispatch center in San Salvador, where this photo was taken, the boys live together in crowded rooms and share responsibility for all domestic tasks. A gentle camaraderie prevails.**********************************************It is with great pleasure that I share elements of the project to which I devoted the last year. On assignment for National Geographic Magazine, I traveled to countries all over the world exploring the various ways that boys learn to become men. The project comprises a series of case studies that afford insights into our notions of gender, masculinity and belonging. My work on boys and masculinity forms part of @natgeo's current special issue on gender, which includes extraordinary work by @hammond_robin, @stephsinclairpix, @kitracahana, and @ljohnphoto. I’ll be sharing images and observations on my feed @petekmuller. Please fellow along! #men #masculinity #gender #manhood #genderrevolution #boys #boyhood #elsalvador #comandossalvamente #sansalvador
