Susan Strong made this quilt sometime around 1825-1840. It features an appliquéd and embroidered adaptation of the Great Seal of the United States.
The Great Seal has been in use since 1782 to authenticate documents issued by the United States government. In Susan's adaptation, the eagle holds vines in its talons instead of the arrows. The stars above the eagle represent the 13 colonies.
Susan Strong was born on July 4, 1809, in Frederick County, Maryland.
