Submerged ~ When an 8.7 earthquake rocked Pulau Balai island March 28, 2005, this tiny island off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, dropped 1.2 meters (more than 3 feet) into the ocean. Years later, Busrani must still enter his water-filled home using a walkway or pier made from pieces of rock and coral, scatted along the shore. Due to lack of money to raise the floor of his home, at high tide, there is over an inch of water throughout the entire house, making due with his small pier as a thunderstorm approaches.

I photographed this kind fellow for a @ナショナルジオグラフィック story on the science of tsunamis, often remembering how resilient the people are on Pulau Balai, never giving up, even when effected by forces of nature, alter our lives.
