Photo and caption by @petekmuller. From a perch on the Ngong Hills, my father and I watch the sunset over the Great Rift Valley. When I stood on this escarpment for the first time, during a visit to Kenya from South Sudan in 2010, I knew that I wanted, at least for a time, to call this country home. After settling here in 2012, I implored my father, Norman, to visit, coaxing him with photographs and impassioned descriptions of Kenya’s diverse, natural splendor. Finally, in his 80th year, he took the 7,000-mile flight from the east coast of the United States to the bustling capital of Nairobi. We traveled, at his request and my pleasure, to the viewpoint that prompted my initial Kenyan love affair. As the sun began to sink, casting backlight onto rainsqualls in the distance, I moved a small couch from the patio to the lawn. No longer able to stand or walk with confidence, he sat quietly at the valley’s edge. I set a camera on a tripod, affixed a cable release, and took a seat next to him. We said little in those moments and it occurred to me that we had not shared such a reflective and humbling communion since our hikes in the White Mountains of New England when I was just a boy. In those days, when I would tire, he’d carry my pack and, at times, my entire flaccid body. He was young and strong then and determined to expose me to the natural world from which he derived such pleasure and wonder. When I look at this image today, I’m struck by how much and how quickly things change. Now, after the merciless progression of time, I steady him and carry his pack. We can still explore, but not nearly as far nor as fast. But his determination to share with me the serenity of the natural world was effective and lasting, now etched into the fabric of my being. To repay his devotion by showing him the splendors of my own journey has been a profound and emotional experience. #Kenya #father #dad #Africa #sons #fathersandsons #family #gratitude #manhood #masculinity
