Quilt-making in Gee’s Bend, Alabama brought together daughters, mothers, aunts, and grandmothers who would teach one another and compare and critique each other’s work. Many Gee’s Bend quilters share the last name Pettway, a marker of their common history as the descendants of slaves, and their quilts are constructed from remnants of salvaged fabrics: work clothes from the fields, old garments that no longer fit, and exhausted household textiles. The quilts often act as artifacts of remembrance, made of material that had a personal significance to its maker and had been saved for this end. #TheKeeper #GeesBend #GeesBendQuilts
