Words by expedition leader Ben Ayers (@jetbutterflies) ~

Asdhan Kulunge doing rope maintenance in our remote jungle camp between honey harvests. In his hand is a locally-made ‘kukuri’ knife - a ubiquitous tool used for everything from removing splinters from fingers to slaughtering animals and chopping down entire trees. The kukuri - like the bamboo rope in the foreground - was handmade by village craftsmen, and will last for generations. ~

When you pass through Nepal’s remote communities, it is easy to see only poverty and isolation. But, digging a bit deeper, a picture emerges of a culture and lifestyle that very much emulates the Western world’s highest ideals of unity, resourcefulness, spirituality, and environmental sustainability. Nearly everything Asdhan’s family eats is grown within walking distance of his home, the tools of his trade are made by himself and his neighbors, and the village is powered by a nearby micro-hydropower project. #nepaliloveyou ~
