Photo by @mike_hettwer - The Maunsell Forts look like something out of a science fiction movie, and not the defensive towers they were for Great Britain during World War II. The towers were built to help protect the British from German warplanes dropping bombs on them. The Thames River was used as a guide for German pilots to fly all the way to London. The towers were located near the entry to the river in the English Channel between England and France.

Teams of 250 British soldiers lived in these tower groups and used the antiaircraft guns mounted on the roof to shoot at the incoming planes. The soldiers used the precarious catwalks to go to other towers. They were decommissioned in the 1950's and were used by pirate radio stations after. One of the towers here was struck by a Norwegian ship in the 1953 knocking it down and killing several people. Now they are a curiosity reachable by boat in several hours from the southeast coast of England via Queenborough.
