The second part of the Latin name of the mountain hare, Lepus timidus, means fearful. During winter when food is scarce, the hare has every reason to be cautious with all of those hungry eyes on him. However, with its excellent hearing, watchful eyes, high speed and good camouflage, the hare is not an easy prey.
Last year, the mountain hare has appeared on the Norwegian Red List of species as near threatened. Habitat loss and hunting have a negative impact on the hare population. In addition, climate change with milder winters and less snow create further difficulties, making the hare's beautiful white coat a betraying curse during early melting. The hare population is facing difficult times ahead.
