The coyote has long been the subject of legend. Trickster, creator, and messenger are a few of the roles that the coyote occupies in oral traditions of Plains Indian tribes throughout the American west. According to Crow tradition, Old Man Coyote would impersonate the creator; “Old Man Coyote took up a handful of mud and out of it made people”.
