Singer sewing machine, 1920s, on display in #ObjectProject.
On February 21, 1842, John Greenough of Washington, D.C., received the first American patent for a sewing machine. By the 1890s, mass production of clothing was taking off, with tools like cloth-cutting machines and sewing machines used to make garments at a faster pace.
The Singer sewing machine, created by Isaac Singer, was known to sew 900 stitches a minute. Speedier production meant that more Americans could afford the latest fashions, purchasing ready-to-wear clothes from department stores and mail-order catalogs.
