Step back in time to the 18th century through the watercolours of British artist Francis Towne. 52 of his views of Rome are currently on display in our free exhibition in Room 90. These works are among the great creative landmarks in the use of watercolour within British art.
This watercolour was perhaps Towne’s first drawing on arrival in the city in October 1780. By beginning with the Colosseum, Towne reflects its iconic status as a symbol of the ruin of Rome’s once-mighty empire. The ancient ruins depicted in Towne’s landscapes were his way of delivering a moral warning to 18th-century Britain not to make the same mistakes – and suffer the same fate – as ancient Rome.
