Many Roman mosaics adorn the walls of the Museum’s West stairs and this week we’re focusing in on some of these beautiful designs. In 1856–1857, archaeologist Charles Thomas Newton uncovered a Roman villa with mosaic floors in several rooms while searching for the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. Newton, who later went on to head up the Greek and Roman Antiquities Department at the British Museum, decided to record the pavements before some of them were removed. This was one of the earliest occasions when photography was used on an archaeological excavation. This mosaic from the 4th century AD is one of the ones he found at the site at Bodrum (now in modern Turkey). It shows the mask of Phobos (Fear) at its centre within a radiating petal design.
