Stem cells are our body’s all-rounders. They are the source of all tissue types. This makes them particularly valuable in drug development as well: they can be used to simulate entire organs and even to model diseases. Bayer researchers are seeking new treatment approaches using what are termed induced pluripotent stem cells.
Stem cells offer enormous potential for medical research. Work with embryonic stem cells is associated with ethical concerns, however.
Bayer researchers are using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). They can be produced from skin cells, for example, and then converted into different types of cells.
With iPSCs, specific diseases can be simulated in a culture dish as a model to find new therapies.
