The wood is resinous and very durable and is especially useful for construction. The dry leaves of sal are still a major source for production of leaf plates in the northern and eastern parts of the country.
Go to @mattiasklumofficial to meet one of the world's prettiest deer that live in this forest, always on the alert for predators like tigers and leopards. The leaves of the Sal are also used fresh to serve ready made paan (betelnut preparations) and small snacks. The used leaves/plates are frequently eaten by goats and cattle that roam the streets. The tree has therefore protected northern India from a flood of plastic plates and styrofoam that would have caused tremendous pollution. Given that it is so popular it has obviously led to a huge decline in many areas. But In places like Kanha there are still vast expanses of Sal forests. Working in this place is really quite amazing.
