Photo by @daviddoubilet A curious American Crocodile approaches my wife and underwater partner Jennifer Hayes as we photographed in the mangrove systems of the Gardens of the Queen, a National Park located 50 miles off the Southern coast of Cuba. The croc, used to divers, was more curious than aggressive, passed by Jennifer and then rested on the bottom in the sea grass. The crocodiles are called the "engineers" of the mangrove systems because the crocs create runways that improve water circulation through the dense roots systems. We worked in the mangroves many days and encountered a handful of crocodiles that are used to the boats, divers and snorkelers . In this frame the croc is between Jennifer and myself and I am about 2 feet away using twin strobes to light the 9-10 foot long guy as he slowly passed between us.
