Involving women in this years elections is a step, and we're obligated to grasp it. We would only have ourselves to blame if we don't." Kadhra Almubarak, a girl's youth club developer from Eastern Province Saudi Arabia, is currently one of 9 women elected to office, although the number continues to fluctuate as votes are counted.

Yesterday marked the first day in Saudi Arabia's 83-year history when women are permitted to both vote for their municipal council members and run as candidates. So far, 9 women have been elected into office, a feat which is symbolic of the people who voted for them as much as it is of the women themselves. Feelings among Saudis are a mix between optimism and doubt that the elections signify any real progress for women in the country; however for many, in a country where women can't travel or leave the country without a male guardian's consent, it's a step in the right direction.
