Photo by @shonephoto (Robbie Shone) - Last week I spent a night exploring Europe’s highest cave. Hidden away below the Sphinx Observatory inside the Jungfraujoch above Grindelwald, Switzerland, the cave is at an altitude of 3,482m (11,430ft) asl. We were there to collect samples for a scientific study of high altitude caves. The Sphinx Observatory (pictured) is one of the highest observatories in the world. The construction of the building began in 1937 and since its completion it’s been used for many different research studies from glaciology/medicine - cosmic rays/astrophysics - astronomy. In the past few years, environmental sciences have appeared more in the forefront.
