Photograph by @Thomas Peschak I travelled far offshore from South Africa's east coast in the hope of finding oceanic white tip sharks and sperm whales. As the day grew longer and longer it became clear that the oceans bigger critters were a no show, so I began to focus my photography on the smaller denizens of the open seas. My most fascinating find of that day was a predatory siphonophore with a translucent larval fish ensnared in its tentacles. The red pellet like structures are stinging nematocysts to whose virulence I can personally attest, having been stung in the face while making this photograph. #south africa #ocean #photooftheday @ナショナルジオグラフィック @thephotosociety @natgeocreative @Thomas Peschak
