#NationalFossilDay Puzzle 2/6: For many mammals, vision is a matter of life and death. Mammals that require good depth perception to locate food or evade capture tend to have forward-facing orbits (top left corner of photo). That means their eyes are similar in orientation to human eyes rather than, say, the eyes of a cow. Forward-facing orbits allow fields of vision in the left and right eyes to overlap, providing better binocular vision and improved depth perception. The orbits of this animal face forward, but not to the extent observed in humans or very fast runners like cheetahs. The environment this mammal lived in was undergoing changes that saw increasing mixture of woodlands and savannahs during a cooling and drying trend in North America from more forested conditions before.
