Photo @Keith Ladzinski / A large bull #elk missing an antler and displaying some fresh battle wounds on his side from a recent battle. The fighting between competitive males during the breeding/rutting season isn't a gentle game and in extreme battles can even result in death. The loss of this antler will only effect this bull for a short time. As winter sets in elk "drop", or shed, their antlers at the end of each annual season. Next spring these will begin to grow back and will steadily do so throughout the summer in preparation for the rut once again. Photographed outside of #RockyMountainNationalPark this evening.
