Lubmin was the largest nuclear power station in East Germany before closure shortly after the German reunification in1991. Still 1,000 people are working on the site for decommissioning operations. Nuclear decommissioning is the process whereby a nuclear power plant site is dismantled to the point that it no longer requires measures for radiation protection. Includes clean-up of radioactive materials and progressive demolition of the plant. Most of nuclear plants were designed for a life of about 30–40 years. Usually a safety enclosure procedure for a nuclear power plant takes around 40 to 60 years and the average cost are sky-rocket.
As an example, the three damaged reactors at Fukushima are expected to be decommissioned as well as the number 4. Estimated at ¥10 trillion (US$ 100 billion) for decontaminating Fukushima and dismantling all reactors in Japan and considering long time damage to environment and economy, including agriculture, cattle breeding, fishery, water depuration, tourism
