These days you must be lucky to encounter moose (Alces alces) in the Rapadalen valley, deep in the Sarek National Park in Sweden. A couple of decades ago, a large population was living in the birch forests, but their numbers have dropped considerably since the turn of the millennium. Some say it happened due to an accident—the animals drowned beneath the collapsing ice while crossing a river during their seasonal migration into the national park, to their mating grounds. Others say that hunting decimated the population that is allowed outside the borders of the national park. Anyhow, I spent months photographing moose in Sarek in the '90s and nostalgia drew me back to these forests in the last years, trying to find a nice male to photograph. Several days of walking and searching was every now and then rewarded when I spotted the king of the boreal forest laying under the yellow autumn canopy.
