The romanticized view of the once nomadic people hardly exists in the context that the west has perpetuated. The idea of what the Kalahari bushmen are has given rise to enclaves of cultural tourism, in many cases acting as a catalyst for practices and traditions otherwise forgotten or discarded. Oddly, the demand for the ideal of the bushmen is one of the last things keeping the old ways alive. Most San live in villages much like the rest the rural populations, while some families travel to work in tourist lodges during the busy months. The work provides not only income, but a perpetuation of tradition.
