Beginning in the late 18th century, some volunteer fire fighters began to wear hats painted with their company's name to identify themselves at chaotic fire scenes.
This fire hat was used by the Vigilant fire company of Baltimore, Maryland. The hat is painted black overall, with the Eye of Providence, or the All-Seeing Eye, which represents an omnipresent gaze.
The owner’s initials “J.W.H." are painted in a fancy script on the hat’s crown. The Vigilant Fire Company was founded in 1804 and operated until the introduction of the paid fire department in 1859.
