To celebrate British Science Week, we're sharing science facts each day from the Museum's scientists and conservators.
Scanning electron microscopes allow Museum scientists to study objects at magnifications up to several thousand times. This torc is from the Winchester hoard, an important discovery of Iron Age gold from about 75–25 BC.
Analysis of the gold by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry showed that everything in the hoard was made of gold of high purity. Indeed, it is of much higher purity than the Celtic coinage of Britain and France, and higher than other British jewellery made before the Roman period.
