Lots of buzz today about a certain Apple you wear on your wrist. We wanted to share this 1849-1851 prototype watch made by Oliver Marsh of American Watch Company of Massachusetts. They were the first firm to mass-produce watches by machine.
Their timing was great: the appetite for watches in the US in the early part of the 19th century was huge. About $46 million worth were imported between 1825 and 1858, especially from England Switzerland. To tap into this market, a few Americans attempted to develop watches domestically, but probably no more than 2,000 watches were made in the United States before the 1850s. ⌚️⌚️⌚️ #watches #wrists #history
