Mr. Spike Lee @sheltonjlee will be in-store at the Paul Stuart flagship store on Madison Avenue at 45th Street, Wednesday, February 11th from 5:00pm-6:30 pm signing copies of the new book SEPARATE CINEMA: THE FIRST 100 YEARS OF BLACK POSTER ART, published by #reelartpress for which Mr. Lee wrote the afterword. In honor of #blackhistorymonth, Paul Stuart will present a five-week exhibit of art from the new book, which celebrates the first 100 years of black film poster art. The images recount the diverse and historic journey of the black film industry from the earliest days of Hollywood to present day. The installation, in both the store windows and throughout the interior, will feature images from the book comprised of both posters and film stills. Part aesthetic, part nostalgic, the posters and photographs have meaning to young and old alike, and possess the power to transcend ethnicity. They capture the spirit and energy of an earlier time. They remind people of the pioneers of the past, those courageous and daring African-American filmmakers, entertainers and artists whose dreams and struggles paved the way for future generations. The book also includes a foreword by black history authority and renowned academic Henry Louis Gates Jr. Mr. John Duke Kisch, author and archive director of Separate Cinema, will also be on hand for the book signing. SPIKE LEE is a writer-director, actor, producer, author and educator who has helped revolutionize Modern Black cinema. Lee is a forerunner in the ‘Do It Yourself’ school of independent film. Lee has recently finished his Kickstarter funded Da Sweet Blood of Jesus (2014). Lee began teaching a course on filmmaking at Harvard in 1991 and in 1993 he became a Professor at New York University’s Graduate Film Program, Tisch School of the Arts where he received his Master of Fine Arts in Film Production. In 2002, he was appointed the Artistic Director of the Graduate Film Program. Spike Lee has also combined his extensive creative experience into yet another venture: partnering with DDB Needham, he created Spike/DDB, a full-service advertising agency. #spikelee #separatecinema @tonynourmand
