Quartz glassware is the secret ingredient to many scientific experiments. It handles heat and cold without cracking and does not interact with light, making it a wonder material. At #GE Global Research, a tube of almost pure quartz is heated with a semi-circle of gas torches to 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit where the material becomes viscous like caramel.
