Marrakech, Morocco: If you stroll the streets of Morocco it will not be long before you find yourself face to face with the Hand of Fatima. ‘Hamsa’ (or ‘Khamsa’- meaning ‘five’ in Arabic), is the hand of Prophet Mohammed’s daughter Fatima, and bears the symbols of patience, loyalty, faith and resistance to difficulties. According to Islamic belief the hand is a representative of blessings, power, and strength and tells of Fatima’s tough life, and struggle for dignity. The hand protects against the Evil Eye-a malicious stare which embodies negative emotions: jealousy, hatred and envy. Throughout history various ancient cultures and religions sought protection from evil forces. The Levantine Christians call it the Hand of Mary, and In Judaism it is the Hand of Miriam. The hand is a common symbol and while it spans beliefs and definitions it consistently remains a positive symbol and one of protection. Today, in our modern world we find these ancient symbols everywhere-the hand is everywhere - on rings, and pendants, bracelets, and tattoos, on t-shirts, and ceramics and even wallpapers. But in Morocco, the hand is still where it was centuries ago—on the door, protecting it’s family from the Evil Eye.
