The Great Plains were covered with bison before 1800. By the 1890s, fewer than 1,000 remained. Inspired to preserve and showcase the species, a Smithsonian taxidermist pressed for the Smithsonian to acquire bison for display.
Bison were among the first animals in the Smithsonian’s collection when President Grover Cleveland signed into law the creation of the National Zoological Park in 1889. Originally exhibited on the National Mall, the bison were relocated to the Zoo's Rock Creek campus in 1891. And now, the bison are back! Two females are on display at the @nationalzoo as of today! #bison125 #mammals #bigandbeautiful
