Today in 1847: Mormon leader Brigham Young and followers arrive in valley of the Great Salt Lake in Utah.
By 1848, Young had a mint set up in Utah to turn California gold dust, brought back by Mormon miners, into Utah coins.
The first Mormon coins appeared in December 1848. These were the very first American coins struck west of the Mississippi.
This $20 coin includes two important symbols: the emblem of the Mormon Priesthood, a three-pointed crown above an All-Seeing eye and clasped hands, joined in friendship and solidarity.
Few of these early Utah coins have survived. Most were melted down in the early 1850s.
