In 1865, after the Confederate army's surrender, John Wilkes Booth fatally shot President Lincoln at the Ford's Theater. The attack was part of a larger failed plot to murder national leaders and throw the Union into turmoil. Booth was later killed by a federal officer, and eight co-conspirators were arrested and jailed, where they wore the arm and leg shackles pictured here on the left. Also pictured are the life mask of Abraham Lincoln and a medal honoring black troops from 1864.
