Can the past teach us about the present?

Father Justin thinks so. The librarian at the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine in Sinai, Egypt, he recently walked through our newest exhibition “Africa & Byzantium” to share his thoughts on the significance of Byzantine icons and how they still hold importance for us today.

We are honored that four icons and one illuminated manuscript have travelled from the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine, Sinai to The Met to be part of this exhibition—some travelling outside Egypt for the first time.

Visit “Africa & Byzantium” through March 3 to explore the staggering artistic achievements of medieval Africa. This long-overdue exhibition highlights how the continent contributed to the development of the premodern world and offers a more complete history of the vibrant multiethnic societies of north and east Africa that shaped the artistic, economic, and cultural life of Byzantium and beyond.

📍 “Africa & Byzantium” is on view now in Gallery 199 at The Met Fifth Avenue.
