Is this art or food or something else? 🎨🍌🤷🏽‍♂️

The National Gallery of Victoria exhibits a banana sculpture as part of its Triennial exhibition.

The work is titled “The Comedian” and is by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. Another edition of this work has previously sold for $120,000 USD.

The work has courted a lot of controversy in the past, not just because it is ‘simply’ a banana duct taped to the wall, but because some hungry passers-by have decided to eat it as a snack.

When it was originally exhibited at Art Basel Miami in 2019, performance artist David Datuna yanked it off the wall and ate it as part of his own performance called “Hungry Artist”.

When the work was exhibited again in Seoul, South Korea in April 2023, student Noh Huyn-soo removed the banana from the wall and started eating it, claiming he “was hungry”. When he was finished, he taped the banana skin back to the wall.

What do you think about this work? Apeeling or not? 🤷🏽‍♂️🍌
