Some thoughts on Thanksgiving…

Thanksgiving is about celebration - celebrating life and everything that Mother Earth provides for us from her womb of treasures. Appreciating the resources that she provides has been a long-lived ceremony of the indigenous peoples who have protected the land for centuries.

Although thanksgiving is a beautiful concept, let’s not forget the hurt that was caused, the land that was lost, the violence that was administered and the culture that was forgotten.

I feel deeply appreciative towards indigenous peoples, how sensitively they love and act towards our land. They are the custodians of the Earth and we who are not indigenous should do everything we can to repay our debts, to learn from indigenous wisdom and to credit indigenous culture where it needs to be credited.

Here are some of the books that have helped me so much, and that are from the magical minds of indigenous authors:

1. Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer
2. Sand Talks by Tyson Yunkaporta
3. Whereas by Layli Long Soldier
4. Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko

Today let’s celebrate our thanks and appreciate all that Mother Nature continues to lovingly give to us, while paying respect to indigenous peoples, then and now, who are caring for our Earth better than anyone else, and usually with fewer resources than anyone else.

As I searched for images for this reflection, I found it difficult to find enough information on the photographers and their practices with their First Nations’ subjects. I don’t know whether the people in these images were paid for their modelling services. I don’t know if this photographer ever gave money to this reservation because the story is not easy to find. I am using this picture because I find it beautiful. If anyone knows any back stories about it, I’d love to hear them. This is a note to think carefully about image rights and the people who are in pictures, especially when histories are violent and sensitive.
