Endemic to the Annamite Mountains along the border of Vietnam and Laos, it’s estimated that fewer than 100 Saola span across 25,000km2. Saola are a forest-dwelling bovine listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List and is considered as one of the world’s most endangered and rare large mammals. Saola are genetically unique and distinct and the only species of its genus. Taronga’s Field Conservation Grants give funding and support to conservation projects that help wildlife, habitats, and communities all over the world. This year, we granted the Saola Foundation for Annamite Mountains Conservation a Field Grant to help find and conserve this critically endangered species. The Field Grant provides the Soala Foundation with funding towards their goal of developing effective field techniques to track Saola through integrated search programs.
