🇬🇧 In ancient times, an imposing circle of defensive walls was erected to defend the city of Naples from military attacks.

From the Bourbon period until the start of the 20th century, these walls were gradually torn down to make room for the expansion of the city and its ever-growing population. Naples became one of the most populated cities in the country.
Today, parts of these walls can still be seen and four of the many city gates are still standing.

At the request of Charles III of Spain, almost all of the city’s gates were demolished from the 18th century onward as part of the urban redevelopment plan of Naples, which continued up until the beginning of the 20th century.

The four remaining gates found in the centre of Naples are Porta San Gennaro in Piazza Cavour; Porta Nolana, named as such because it was the starting point of a road leading to Nola; Porta Capuana, located close to Castel Capuano; and Port’Alba in Piazza Dante, which was erected in 1625 and takes its name from the Spanish viceroy of Naples, Antonio Alvarez of Toledo, Duke of Alba.

🇮🇹 Napoli già in antichità aveva eretto a difesa della città una cerchia muraria imponente per difenderla da eventuali attacchi militari.

A partire dall’epoca borbonica, fino agli inizi del novecento le mura difensive vennero mano a mano abbattute per far spazio all’ampliamento della città essendo in continua crescita demografica: Napoli risultava essere una delle città tra le più popolose della penisola.

Oggi parte di queste mura è ancora visibile e rimangono tutt’ora presenti quattro tra le numerose porte d’accesso alla città.

Quasi la totalità delle porte furono abbattute a partire dal XVIII secolo per volere di Carlo III visto il progetto di riassetto urbanistico della città, che continuò fino all’inizio del XX secolo.

Le porte ancora presenti nel centro di Napoli sono Porta San Gennaro, situata a Piazza Cavour, Porta Nolana (chiamata così perché partiva da quel punto una strada per Nola), Porta Capuana, vicino a Castel Capuano e Port’Alba in piazza Dante, che prese il nome dal viceré Antonio Alvarez de Toledo, duca D’Alba ed eretta nel 1625.
